CBM Calculator for Freight Shipping
Use this CBM calculator to convert the final outer length, width and height of each packed piece into cubic meters and multiply by quantity. Separate package groups when their dimensions differ, then add the group totals. CBM describes geometric cargo volume. It does not prove stackability, usable container fit, pallet footprint, LCL minimum charges or the final freight price.
Calculate Total Cargo CBM
Enter the outside dimensions for one final packed piece, choose the correct unit and add the quantity. Run each dimension group separately when cartons, crates or pallets are not identical.
CBM Formula and Unit Conversion
The calculator converts each dimension to meters before multiplying. Keep the original measurement sheet so the result can be reproduced and corrected if packing changes.
| Input unit | Convert each dimension to meters | Formula | Record beside result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meters | Use the measured value | L × W × H × quantity | Package group and packing revision |
| Centimeters | Divide by 100 | L × W × H ÷ 1,000,000 × quantity | Final outer dimensions |
| Millimeters | Divide by 1,000 | L × W × H ÷ 1,000,000,000 × quantity | Unit and measurement date |
| Inches | Multiply by 0.0254 | Converted L × W × H × quantity | Who measured and where |
Measure Cargo for a Quote-Ready CBM Result
Use the physical handoff condition. Product dimensions or inner-carton dimensions can understate the freight volume when export packing, pallets or protective structures are added later.
- Measure the longest outside points after final wrapping, strapping, corners and protrusions are included.
- Record cartons, crates and pallets as separate groups when dimensions differ.
- Use the quantity that will actually be collected, not the purchase-order quantity before shortages or splits.
- Recalculate after palletizing, crating, compression or repacking changes the outer dimensions.
- Keep gross weight beside CBM because freight decisions may use both volume and weight.
- Ask the forwarder to confirm stacking, LCL, container and charge-basis assumptions for the selected service.
CBM Calculator Questions
These answers keep the arithmetic separate from packing and carrier decisions. The final booking should use current service rules and accepted cargo data.
What does one CBM mean?
One CBM is one cubic meter of geometric volume. A package measuring one meter by one meter by one meter has one CBM before any usable-space or commercial rule is applied.
Can I add CBM for cartons with different sizes?
Yes. Calculate each identical dimension group separately, multiply by its quantity, then add the group totals. Keep the groups visible for loading and verification.
Does CBM tell me whether cargo fits a container?
Not by itself. Door opening, internal dimensions, pallet footprints, orientation, stacking strength, weight distribution and unusable space also affect a real loading plan.
Should pallet dimensions replace carton dimensions?
Use the final condition handed to the carrier. If cartons are palletized, measure the complete loaded pallet, including overhang, wrap and pallet height.

- International Maritime Organization – Verified gross mass: IMO states that the SOLAS verified-gross-mass requirements entered into force on 1 July 2016. It describes two verification methods: weighing the packed container, or weighing all packages, cargo, pallets, dunnage and securing material and adding the container tare mass through the approved certified process. Verified gross mass is a condition for loading a packed container, not an entitlement to loading.
