What a Useful Freight Calculation Must Record
A result should be reproducible by the buyer, supplier, warehouse and forwarder. Record the input version and the operational limit beside the number so a later packing change does not silently invalidate the quote.

Freeze These Cargo Facts Before You Calculate
Measurements should describe the cargo that will actually be collected, not an early product drawing or a supplier estimate. If packing changes after calculation, rerun the tool and ask for written reapproval before pickup.
- Measure the outside of each final carton, crate or pallet, including protrusions and protective packing.
- Separate package groups when dimensions differ instead of averaging unlike pieces.
- Record quantity and actual gross weight for the same packing version.
- Name the unit used for every dimension and the divisor used for dimensional weight.
- Disclose batteries, liquids, powders, magnets, wood packing and other acceptance-sensitive contents.
- Keep the calculated result with the date, supplier and packing revision used for the quote.
Freight Calculator Questions Buyers Ask
These answers separate a planning calculation from a carrier quotation. The same arithmetic can lead to a different operational result when the packing, service or charge rule changes.
Does a CBM result equal the space charged by a carrier?
Not automatically. CBM is the geometric volume of the entered packages. Usable container space, pallet footprints, stacking limits, LCL rules and minimum charges can change the commercial result.
Which volumetric divisor should I use?
Use the divisor stated for the actual carrier and service being quoted. Do not carry a divisor from one express, air or consolidation service into another without confirmation.
Should I calculate before or after palletizing?
Calculate the version that will be handed to the carrier. If the warehouse later adds a pallet, overpack or crate, replace the dimensions and weight before the booking is released.
Can a freight calculator provide a final shipping price?
No. A final quotation also needs the commodity, origin, destination, ready date, service scope, current capacity, customs responsibilities and destination delivery details.

Frequently asked questions
How is chargeable weight calculated for air freight from China?
Air carriers bill the greater of actual gross weight and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is length x width x height in centimeters divided by 6000 per piece. Low-density cargo almost always bills on volume, so compare both figures before you book.
Does a higher CBM always mean a higher ocean freight quote?
For LCL, yes, because ocean LCL bills per CBM or per 1000 kg, whichever is greater. For FCL you pay a flat container rate regardless of fill, so past roughly 15 CBM a 20ft FCL often beats LCL. Use the FCL vs LCL calculator to find your own break-even.
Why do two forwarders quote a different CBM for the same cargo?
CBM itself is fixed by the outer carton dimensions, but forwarders differ on rounding, whether they add pallet height, and their minimum chargeable volume, which is usually 1 CBM. Confirm the exact carton dimensions and pallet spec each quote assumes.
Are these calculators a substitute for a booking quote?
No. They estimate volume, weight and container fit so you can sanity-check a quote and prepare accurate carton data. The final price still depends on lane, service level, surcharges and customs, which only a live quote reflects.
