Volumetric Weight Calculator for Air and Express
Use this volumetric weight calculator to estimate dimensional kilograms from final outer dimensions, quantity and the divisor stated by the carrier or quotation. Compare that result with actual gross weight and preserve the larger planning value. Divisors, rounding, minimum charges and accepted package measurements vary by service, so the calculator is a transparent comparison tool rather than a carrier billing promise.
Compare Dimensional and Actual Weight
Enter final outside dimensions, quantity and actual gross weight. Select only a divisor that appears in the current quotation or carrier rule, then ask the provider to confirm rounding and minimum-charge treatment.
Volumetric Weight Formula and Decision Boundary
The formula converts package volume into a planning weight. It does not decide cargo acceptance, mode, rate, density rule or every handling charge.
| Field | What to use | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | Final outside package measurements | Protective packing changes dimensional weight | Carrier measurement and rounding |
| Quantity | Pieces in the same dimension group | Mixed sizes need separate calculations | Actual collected piece count |
| Divisor | Current quoted or carrier divisor | A smaller divisor produces a higher result | Service, lane and unit convention |
| Actual weight | Final gross weight for the same pieces | The comparison may use the higher value | Scale record and minimum charge |
Prepare a Reproducible Chargeable-Weight Check
Keep the dimensions, weight and rule together. A number without its divisor and packing version cannot be audited when the supplier, warehouse, forwarder or carrier measures the cargo again.
- Group packages with identical final dimensions and calculate each group separately.
- Convert dimensions into the units required by the quoted formula.
- Multiply length, width, height and quantity, then divide by the stated divisor.
- Compare dimensional kilograms with final actual gross kilograms for the same group.
- Record the higher planning value, divisor, rounding rule and source of measurements.
- Ask for reapproval when packaging, quantity, carrier, service or divisor changes.
Volumetric Weight Questions
These answers explain why online results can differ from a final quotation. The carrier’s current service rule and accepted measurements control the actual charge basis.
Is dimensional weight the same as chargeable weight?
Dimensional weight is one input. A service may compare it with actual weight and apply rounding, minimums or other rules before establishing the chargeable basis.
Why do different calculators give different results?
They may use different units, divisors, rounding, quantity treatment or package assumptions. Compare formulas and enter the same final cargo version before judging the difference.
Should I use 5000 or 6000 as the divisor?
Use the divisor stated for the actual carrier, lane and service. Do not choose the more favorable result when the quotation specifies another rule.
Can repacking reduce dimensional weight?
It can when final outer volume is reduced without creating damage or acceptance risk. Measure the completed repack and obtain a revised quotation before release.
